In this book chapter for forthcoming Routledge book "The EU, China and Central Asia: Global and Regional Cooperation in A New Era” edited by Fabienne Boussuyt and Bart Dessein from Ghent University, Academy researcher Niva Yau directs attention to the Chinese imageries of Central Asia in shedding light on the domestic context of China’s Central Asian studies and its associated impact on Chinese foreign policy goals in the region. Two key historical memories, the Silk Road and political banishment have made lasting impressions on the Chinese imageries of Central Asia. The impacts these have on Chinese academic and policy works on Central Asia highlight the ways in which historical relationship between China and Central Asia has an enduring effect on China’s interactions with Central Asia today.
