Public Lecture titled “Rethinking the Interaction between Cryptocurrencies and Citizen Empowerment in Central Asia”

On 18 January 2022 Dr. Michael Lambert, Associate Research Fellow at the OSCE Academy, delivered a Public Lecture titled “Rethinking the Interaction between Cryptocurrencies and Citizen Empowerment in Central Asia”. In the first part of the lecture, Dr. Lambert provided brief information on Cryptocurrency and indicated the strengths and weaknesses of Cryptocurrencies in the context of Central Asian countries. He outlined the main matters in the region related to using money as counterfeit money, remittances from the diaspora, inflation, and privacy; as well as provided an analysis of the potential of cryptocurrencies to be a reliable answer to the matters. In conclusion, Dr. Lambert highlighted that digital currency and blockchain like any other technology useful and powerful to citizens when the platforms to use them are trustworthy. The lecture was followed by Q&A session, where participants had an opportunity to ask questions they are interested in.
