On 1 April 2025, representatives from the OSCE Academy took part in an online panel discussion entitled "What Does President Trump’s Return Mean for Central Asia?" This event was co-organized with the Hague Research Institute for Eastern Europe, the South Caucasus, and Central Asia; University of Groningen and moderated by Dr. Agha Bayramov, Assistant Professor in the Department of International Relations and International Organisation at the University of Groningen. On behalf of the OSCE Academy, Dr. Pal Dunay, Director, addressed the consequences of changes in the United States on the international system. His presentation title was a quote from Otto von Bismarck: “God has a special providence for fools, drunkards and the United States of America”. The second speaker from the Academy, Dr. Sebastian Mayer, a DAAD Associate Professor, presented “Changing Patterns of Central Asian Security Cooperation” and addressed regional issues. Additionally, Dr. Emilbek Dzhuraev, Senior Lecturer in the Politics and Security programme, delivered a presentation on the implications of the current changes in the U.S. on Central Asia. Dr. Dzhuraev differentiated between factors that contribute to maintaining the distance between the region and Washington and the reduced communication gap with the arrival of the 2nd Trump administration. Over 40 participants attended the discussion, with a significant number of OSCE Academy alumni actively engaging in the Q&A session.
