On 19 September 2024 the OSCE Academy hosted a guest lecture by Dr. Maximilian Burger-Scheidlin, Executive Director of the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC) in Austria. The lecture titled “Competitiveness in Challenging Business Environments: Key Impediments - Short-termism & Corruption? How to Invigorate a Business Environment to Benefit All?” addressed the pressing challenges businesses face globally, particularly in environments plagued by instability and corruption. Based on his global experience, Dr. Burger-Scheidlin shared with the students how a long-term approach helps to reduce corruption, whereas short-term benefit keeps corruption in place. He also discussed the interconnectivity between corruption, human rights, rule of law and the efficiency of using the commercial approach to anti-corruption.
