Central Asian Barometer Conducts a Training on Open Data Accessibility

22 October, 2024

On 21 October 2024 Central Asian Barometer (CAB) in cooperation with the OSCE Academy conducted a training session on the topic "Central Asian Voices: Increasing Open Data Accessibility."

Dr. Indira Satarkulova, Deputy Director of the OSCE Academy, opened the event with welcoming remarks and introduced CAB’s representatives to the audience. The training session was led by Ms. Kasiet Ysmanova, Director of the CAB, who presented best practices for conducting surveys and explained how to evaluate the reliability of data used in analysis. An important part of the presentation focused on effectively communicating survey findings, emphasizing common pitfalls like data misinterpretation, overgeneralization, and selective reporting. The training was conducted in a hybrid format, with in-person sessions held in Russian and simultaneous English translation provided for the online audience. Participants included students from the OSCE Academy and other universities in Bishkek, as well as researchers from institutions such as Kyrgyz-Turkish Manas University and the University of Central Asia. The online audience was geographically diverse, including researchers focusing on Central Asia. After the instructional portion, participants engaged in hands-on activities, critically analyzing short survey reports to assess the reliability of the data and the quality of its presentation. The Q&A session highlighted key topics such as the costs of conducting large-scale surveys and the issue of compensation and incentives for respondents.

The project, Central Asian Voices: Enhancing Open Data Accessibility, was made possible with support from the Friedrich Naumann Foundation for Freedom. Its goal is to make CAB’s data accessible and understandable for a wide audience, especially those without prior experience working with raw survey data.
