On 6 March 2025, students from the Economic Governance and Development (EGD) Programme visited the World Bank office in Bishkek as part of their Good Governance in Central Asia course, led by Professor Aibek Ashirov, a visiting lecturer of the programme.
During the visit, students had the opportunity to meet Mr. Hugh Riddell, Country Manager for the World Bank Group in the Kyrgyz Republic, and to discuss the World Bank's projects and activities in the country. Mr. Riddell shared insights from his extensive professional experience, particularly his work in crisis-affected countries such as Afghanistan, Somalia, and Malawi, where he spent several years throughout his career.
Students were eager to learn about the World Bank’s ongoing initiatives in the region, with a particular focus on the Kyrgyz Republic and the energy sector projects. The discussion highlighted the World Bank's country-specific approach, emphasizing its key priorities in Kyrgyzstan, including energy, water management, and agriculture.
