On 11 March 2025, the OSCE Academy hosted a book presentation titled "Intercommunal Warfare and Ethnic Peacemaking in Central Asia" by Dr. Joldon Kutmanaliev, a researcher at Leuphana University in Germany. The event was opened by Dr. Pal Dunay, the Director of the OSCE Academy, and Dr. Sebastian Mayer, a DAAD Associate Professor at the Academy.
During the presentation, Dr. Kutmanaliev introduced his book and shared insights from his fieldwork, highlighting the crucial role played by local leaders. He explored how geography and social dynamics influenced the events of the 2010 Kyrgyz-Uzbek clashes.
The following Q&A session allowed attendees to engage further with the context of such conflicts, research methods and data collection techniques used in the study. Participants raised questions about the applicability of Dr. Kutmanaliev’s findings to other contexts, the role of informal leadership in peacebuilding, and the broader significance of local-level mediation efforts in global conflict resolution.
