Regional Climate Policy Roundtable

30 June, 2025

On 27 June 2025, the OSCE Academy held a roundable on the topic: “Advancing Regional Climate Policy in Central Asia: Lessons from the EU and Future Perspectives.”  The conference was also the concluding meeting of the Jean Monnet Module Project on European Climate Policy (EUCP) coordinated by Dr. Rahat Sabyrbekov.

The meeting was opened by Dr. Pal Dunay, Director of the OSCE Academy who emphasized the interdisciplinary importance of addressing climate matters, and the need of cooperation between governments, economic actors, NGO sector, including activists, and scholars. In addition to national attention, climate policy issues have to be on the regional agenda. It is fortunate that regional cooperation has improved during the last ten years and serves as foundation for working together across the region on such a complex matter.

The participants of the roundtable were welcomed by Ms. Gulnara Isaeva, National Coordinator of the Erasmus+ programme in Kyrgyzstan. Ms. Isaeva emphasized that the project is the first, and until now the only, successful Jean Monnet Module project from Kyrgyzstan and encouraged scholars to submit further applications in the hope of success.

The event brought together about 60 experts, representatives of the academic community, international organizations, government agencies and the civil sector (in person and online). Dr. Rakhat Sabyrbekov, Saikal Esenamanova, Kyrgyz University of Economics; Dr. Andrea Bassi (online), Founder and CEO Knowledge SRL, Extraordinary Associate Professor of System Dynamics, Stellenbosch University; Maral Sagynalieva, Director of Silk Road Research Center, Ala-Too International University and Coordinator of the AVZUR; and Dr. Kanat Tilekeyev, Deputy Director, Institute of Public Administration and Policy, University of Central Asia, have delivered their presentations followed by a discussion that brought up very important issues, like introducing the decision-makers and private sector to scientific findings on climate change or how to ensure that information reaches target audiences in the regions of Central Asian countries, not only English-speaking academics, but farmers in the villages.

The recording of the event is avaialble on Academy’s YouTube.
