On 26 September 2025, the OSCE Academy in Bishkek hosted a guest lecture by Dr. Maria Adele Carrai, Assistant Professor of Global China Studies at NYU Shanghai, accompanied by Mr. Maksat Koshkarbayev, Senior Program Officer at American Councils for International Education. The lecture, titled “Mapping Global China: New Methods to Understand China’s Expanding Presence,” examined how China’s global ascent is reshaping international norms and power dynamics. China is of the view that when a new major actor appears in the international system it reshapes it. This is being studied by the project of NYU Shanghai including the presentation of quantitative data and analysis. It extends to matters like trade, investment, but also to infrastructure, migration and media analysis. It also studies the role of China in its initiatives, like Belt and Road. The participants of the programme were primarily interested in the effect of those factors on Central Asia and on the international system. The event was organized within the framework of the U.S.-Central Asia Research Network (U.S.-CARNet) in collaboration with the American Councils for International Education.
