27 October, 2025

On 27 October 2025, the OSCE Academy in Bishkek hosted an interactive lecture and discussion on “International Law Through Film” by Dr. Stefan Ziegler, Faculty Member at the Geneva Academy of International Humanitarian Law and Human Rights and an Associate Professor at the Geneva School of Diplomacy. He is also a documentary filmmaker focusing on International Humanitarian Law. The lecture was opened by Mr. Andres Müller, Deputy Head of Mission at the Embassy of Switzerland in Kyrgyzstan, and by Dr. Shairbek Dzhuraev, Deputy Director of the OSCE Academy.

During the lecture, the participants explored Ziegler’s recent documentaries, Broken and The Mandate, and discussed key developments and contemporary challenges in International Humanitarian Law after watching the films. The session encouraged active participation and dialogue between Dr. Ziegler and the attendees, and provided students and other participants a unique opportunity to engage directly with both the practical and cinematic aspects of international law.

The lecture was organized with the support of the Embassy of Switzerland in Kyrgyzstan.

For a more insightful exchange, you are warmly invited to watch the documentary Broken, kindly made available by Stefan Ziegler via this link: Broken (2019, full movie 52’).
