On 21 November 2025, the OSCE Academy welcomed Dr. Kadyrbek Sultakeev (AUCA) for a joint guest lecture attended by students of the MA in Economic Governance and Development (EGD) and the Undergraduate Programme in Economics.
Dr. Sultakeev discussed his recent publication in the Journal of International Development, titled “Harsh Winter Shocks and Distress Sales: Consumption and Asset Smoothing Among Livestock Farmers in Kyrgyzstan.” He highlighted the challenges of publishing in leading international journals and shared insights into academic publishing standards and processes.
During the lecture, Dr. Sultakeev presented the methodology and key findings of his study, which examines how Kyrgyz livestock farmers respond to extreme winter conditions—a topic rarely explored in global research, where most studies focus on heat or drought. He emphasized that the 2012 harsh winter provided a unique case to understand how households manage consumption, protect assets, and cope with climate shocks.
The session concluded with an engaging Q&A, during which students asked thoughtful questions and reflected on how the theoretical concepts they study in class—such as poverty traps, coping strategies, and climate vulnerability—apply in real-world empirical research. The event offered students a valuable opportunity to connect academic theory with current research conducted in Central Asia.
