On 15 January 2026, students from the Economic Governance and Development (EGD) Programme visited the World Bank Group office in Bishkek as part of their Good Governance in Central Asia course, led by Mr. Aibek Ashirov, Visiting Lecturer for the programme. During the visit, students met Mr. Hugh Riddell, Country Manager for the World Bank Group in the Kyrgyz Republic, and Ms. Damira Temirbaeva, Social Development Specialist. Mr. Riddell shared insights from his extensive professional experience, including work in crisis-affected contexts such as Afghanistan, Somalia, and Malawi. He reflected on how the World Bank’s understanding of good governance has evolved since the 1990s, moving toward more context-specific and adaptive approaches. Ms. Temirbaeva presented her experience leading Community-Driven Development initiatives across Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan, highlighting practical challenges and lessons from implementation.
Students actively engaged in discussions on the World Bank’s ongoing initiatives, with particular attention to its country-specific priorities in the Kyrgyz Republic.
