On 24 June 2016, students of the MA Programme in Economic Governance and Development visited the “Altynken” company which is mining, processing and producing of gold and other non-ferrous metals. The company is located in Orlovka, which is an urban-type settlement in Kemin District of Chui Province in Kyrgyzstan. The trip to the mining company was organized within the module on “Economics and Sustainable Management of Mineral Resources” by Mr Jonathon Hornbrook.
The Deputy Director of the company showed the facilities and made a presentation to the students of the OSCE Academy. The presentation addressed the company's achievements, stages of its development and socio-economic impact on the region (Kemin district). The Deputy Director also spoke about the difficulties and challenges the investors, local communities and the local government have been facing.
Following the tour to “Altynken” students met the Vice Mayor of Kemin district, and Members of local City Council. During the meeting students had a chance to discuss with the local authorities the social and economic development of the city before and after the launch of the “Altynken” mining company.
