Webinar on Human Rights dedicated to the 30th Anniversary of Diplomatic Relations between Spain and the Kyrgyz Republic

On 12 July 2022, the OSCE Academy and CASA Asia jointly organized a webinar on "Human Rights and Promotion of Best Practices: the case of Spain and Kyrgyzstan" dedicated to the 30th Anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Spain and the Kyrgyz Republic. The event was moderated by Prof. Dr. Anja Mihr, DAAD Associate Professor at the OSCE Academy.

In his opening remarks, Dr. Alexander Wolters, Director of the OSCE Academy expressed his appreciation for the opportunity to gather and discuss human rights in Central Asia with the partners from the OSCE region. Javier Parrondo, Director General of Casa Asia, highlighted that it is the first step in exchanging views on human rights between two countries.

Researchers, experts, and practitioners from Spain and Kyrgyzstan took part in the dialogue and shared best practices in promoting human rights in Central Asia and Spain. Ms. Asunta Vivó Cavaller, Executive Director of the International Commission against the Death Penalty (ICDP), talked about death sentence cases in Central Asian countries and briefed on the work of the International Commission against the Death Penalty. Ms. Meerim Osmonalieva, Head of the "Oasis" Foundation, Project Manager for Direct Assistance to Victims of Human Trafficking «Care for one - care for all” supported by USAID in the Kyrgyz Republic, provided an analysis of human trafficking and victims of human trafficking in Kyrgyzstan. Professor Antonio Alonso Marcos, CEU San Pablo University, elaborated on HELP (Human Rights Education for Legal Professional) programme in Spain, its advantages and challenges. Ms. Aichurek Kurmanbekova, Independent Researcher, presented on domestic violence in Kyrgyzstan and the responses of victims to abuse.

In his closing remarks. Dr. Wolters expressed a deep impression from the dialogue and noted his expectations to implement such activities in nearly future. In his closing remarks, Ambassador Jorge Urbiola López de Montenegro noted the importance of civil society and highlighted that respect for human rights and rule of law are the key pillars of democracy and economic prosperity.
