Guest Lecture on Mineral Resources and Sustainable Development by Jonathan Hornbrook

On 16 September 2026, students of the OSCE Academy’s BA Programme attended an online guest lecture by Mr. Jonathon Hornbrook as part of the Economics and Sustainable Management of Mineral Resources course, taught by Almaz Ashirov.

The lecture focused on the geopolitical impact on the mineral resources sector and prospects for Central Asia, as well as artisanal mining in Africa. Students had the opportunity to broaden their understanding of current developments in the extractive industries and explore their links to sustainable development and regional economic dynamics.

 

Mr. Hornbrook is an economist and sustainable development professional with extensive experience in trade, socio-economic development, and extractive industries across Central Asia and beyond. He has led programmes for GIZ in Central Asia, Argentina, and Mauritania and has contributed to major international development initiatives. He holds an MA in Politics and Economics from the University of Hamburg and has been teaching Sustainable Development and Mineral Resources Governance at the OSCE Academy since 2012.
